Arizona bans sales of synthetic drugs

You overhear your children or their friends talking about suckers and bath salts.

That’s nice, you think.

Maybe not.

In November, teens at Apache Junction High School made headlines when they were arrested for possession of lollipops laced with hash. Prior to the arrests, the sale of the illicit sweets was advertised on Twitter: “ Yooo (expletive deleted), #HashCandy on deck! $12. Good 8 to 10 hour high! Hit me up ASAP!,” said one of two Tweets, which were later removed, found by the Independent.

Air Force Airman Zachary A. Brester has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

The year 2012 marked a milestone in terms of passenger traffic for Phoenix- Mesa Gateway Airport.

For the first time in the airport’s history, the airline passenger count for 2012 topped one million, totaling 1,377,205, a 44 percent increase from the 956,665 passenger total for the previous year, according to a press release.

The count is more than triple that of 2008, when 357,165 passengers used the airport, located southeast of Power Road and Loop 202 in east Mesa.

Queen Creek residents are giving a thumbs up to a proposed movie theater megaplex with an adjoining entertainment district and hotel in the downtown area.

“I’m really excited to have it super close,” Kyndra Westover, 14, a student at Queen Creek High School, told the Independent, referring to the movie theater during a phone interview Wednesday. “It is kind of a hassle to travel so far.”

Tom Shanley calls himself a political junkie. Or at least that’s what he used to be.

For the past year, he has been having difficulty remembering things, like names and dates, even words.

“I find myself more and more lacking in conversation because I can’t think of a word that’s as simple as my name,” the 79year- old San Tan Valley man told the Independent during a phone interview. “I’m a political junkie and now I can’t remember what I want to tell the guy I’m arguing with over certain points. It’s frustrating.”

Shelle Hamilton of Apache Junction loves dirt – racing along at 80 miles per hour around a dirt race track, that is. She has a lot in common with Danica Patrick, the professional race car driver. Both are competitive, love to drive fast and are able to compete with and even beat the men at a traditionally male dominated sport.

Ms. Hamilton has been a dirt track race car driver for two years. For her it is a way to stay close to her husband, Jason, who also races a dirt track race car.
