August Notes from the Poston Butte Principal
by: Poston Butte High School
All students in the first through tenth grades will be assessed in reading, writing and mathematics. In addition, all students in grades three through eight, and students in the ninth and tenth grades, enrolled in a life science class, will be assessed in science. The purpose of the quarterly benchmark tests is twofold. First, we use the results to identify the concepts and skills in which your child is not proficient so that he/she can be taught at their instructional level. Secondly, the data will reveal the concepts that your child has mastered so that he/she can move forward and focus on the skills that they are
ready to learn; once again teaching at your child’s instructional level.
In order to ensure that students give their maximum effort and that we have accurate data to create a challenging curriculum, designed at each student’s instructional level, our benchmark tests and the post-test are graded. However, since part of the pre-test assesses standards that are not expected to have been mastered by the administration of the test, the grade for that test will be based on completion only.
This year our district pre-test will be given during the week of August 8th. The three benchmark assessments will be given during the weeks of September 12th, December 5th (Dec. 12th for high school) and March 5th. The district post-test, used
in conjunction with the pre-test to measure student academic growth, will be administered the week of May 21st (May 28th
for high school). Please mark your calendars for these important dates, schedule appointments around these dates and convey to your child the importance of doing his/her best. If you have further questions, please feel free to call the school
for clarification.

Choir
The choir program is going through changes this year. There are now four choirs including Mixed Beginning Choir, Encore Show Choir, Advanced Women's Choir Dynamics, and Vocal Point Jazz. Auditions were held on Wednesday, July 27th, for the 2011-2012 show choir. Auditions for Vocal Point Jazz choir will be held next Tuesday. The first concert this year will be entitled "Jungle Mania" on October 25, 2011 at 7:00 pm, and will feature many different song selections that represent Africa. This will include the Encore Show Choir Performance of Disney's Tarzan. The performance should be exciting for the audience with a variety of sounds and costumes to hold their attention. Watch for upcoming events.

Boy’s Golf
The outlook is great for the Broncos Boys this season. The core team is made up of five seniors and two juniors that have significant varsity golf experience. The Division is loaded with talent but there is no reason our team can’t compete. Senior Joseph McCanless, who lead the team in scoring average as a junior, is back looking for his first appearance at the State Tournament. Also returning to the team are the 2010 Golden Bronco, Steven Krause and the 2009 Golden Bronco, Hans Brown. The Golden Bronco Award is given annually to the top athlete who is a leader not only on the course but also in the classroom. The team has made a commitment to success and with leaders like Joseph, Steven and Hans the outlook for a great year has never looked better. Our focus will continue to be on developing a strong work ethic and good sportsmanship as we continue to strive to be the best we can be.

Girl’s Golf
Welcome to the 2011-12 girls golf season. I am Jim Segar and will be coaching the Lady Broncos this year. I am looking forward to a season with lots of improvement and many new faces. We have some returning veteran golfers and some new golfers. I can't wait to get on the golf course and watch the girls improve daily. That is the goal that I have for this year, to get better each and every day. With upper class leadership we look forward to doing well in many areas. These mature golfers are waiting to have some new talent to fortify the squad as we look forward to a Fun, Fantastic, Frenzied, Future.
Come on out and be a spectator! Jim Segar, Coach

Pom
The PBHS Pom Team is excited to start another season. The team had a wonderful time at camp over the summer as they learned several new dances. We cannot wait to show everyone the dances at the home football games. The students have been working very hard on their dance technique and have improved much since last year! In addition to performing at the home football games, the team is fundraising for the chance of a lifetime. The PBHS Pom Team has been invited to perform at the Holiday Bowl Game half time show and parade in San Diego, CA in December! This is a huge opportunity and the team is working very hard to raise all the money needed for the trip, almost $1000 per student. The team is holding numerous fundraisers in order to make this trip happen. Any and all support for the team is greatly appreciated!

Cross Country
I am Krista Cox and I am the head Cross Country coach. Cross Country is starting practice on August 8th after school. We will begin getting into shape with track workouts, yoga, and lifting weights. We will compete in one meet on August 31st at Florence High School. Our goals are to become better holistically as a team as well as build the students personal records. My assistant coach is Jeff Cox and volunteering will be Craig Rudko.

Swimming
We are very excited for swim season this year especially since we will be in a new conference with all new teams that we will be competing against. This new conference is a better match with our ability levels and I feel that our team will substantially improve our individual and team statistics. This year I plan on our team breaking every school record that was established last season, as well as qualifying for the first time in relays and individuals for our state competition at the end of the season. We'll be training again at the Copper Basin YMCA, where they generously let us use their facility. Our team will also have several fundraisers to go towards a future pool on campus. I also plan on incorporating a dry land program which typically consists of stretch cord, bands, med balls, and abs exercises to assist with the overall conditioning of the swimmers. This season our team has a new assistant coach-Helen Kurtz- as well as a volunteer coach-Brian Wager- both who have a tremendous amount of experience. I am very excited to start working with the swimmers and for the season to begin!

Football
The summer was very productive for the 2011 football squad. Great participation in the weight room and successful passing league outings have our coaches very optimistic about the season. In July 135 players traveled to Snowflake, AZ to participate in a week long camp that included workouts 4 times a day. This season will bring some exciting games as we compete against tough East Valley teams including Williams Field, Perry, and Queen Creek. Our home opener will be against Tempe High on September 2nd at 7 PM. Come out and catch a game and cheer the Broncos on to victory.
Coaches: Mike De La Torre, Darrin Thomas, Chris Musselman
VOLLEYBALL
The goals of this year’s coaching staff are very simple but will take constant teaching to acquire; self-respect and respect for coaches and teammates, which will lead to more character for the entire volleyball program. Once this is established,
the heart of the program will lead to a winning attitude. We realize this will take time but it is attainable. With hard work and DEDICATION, we will build the foundation for a great volleyball program for Poston Butte High School.
