Copper Basin Students Medal at Statewide Science Fair

by: Dana Hawman

Copper Basin K-8 students competed this month at the 2012 Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) at the Phoenix Convention Center, bringing home an impressive 31 awards in 2nd, 3rd or 4th place.

“Copper Basin’s participation is an endeavor sponsored by teachers Lori Grantham and Shannon Lisko,” stated Principal Joanne Pike. “They work very hard along with our kids to promote the sciences. I am very proud of our teachers as they take on this very large project with great enthusiasm and style.

Our kids are exposed to tremendous innovative ideas through this program, which ties in perfectly with STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics]. We’re proud to be winners, but the true prize is the kids’ excitement about learning and achieving in science!”

More than 600 students in grades 5-12 participated in the competition, which is split into three divisions, based on their grade levels. To compete, students must have placed in a lower-level science fair. The Arizona Science and Engineering Fair is the annual culmination of science and engineering studies in Arizona K-12 schools and is a part of the Arizona Technology Council. More than 140 schools participated in this year’s AzSEF along with more than 400 volunteer judges.
