Homeschooling in Arizona, Part 1

by: Chelee Heitner-Brabender

Since all states have their own laws and regulations regarding home schooling, it's important to know one's legal obligations as a home educating parent in Arizona.  Happily for Arizona parents, AZ is one of the more home school friendly states in the US.

Other than submitting an initial document (called the "Affadavit of Intent to Home School," which must be notarized and delivered with an original birth certificate to your County's Superintendent of Schools) there are no other reporting or documentation requirements of AZ home schooling parents.

For residents in Pinal County, detailed information can be found here:

Pinal County has prepared a helpful packet of information as well:

For residents of Maricopa County, detailed information can be found here:

Maricopa County has a great list of resources as well:

Affadavits can be downloaded from the above websites.  Notary service currently is $2.00 per signature at the UPS Store in Fry's Marketplace at Combs/Gantzel.  Fill the affadavit out in advance, but don't sign it until you're with the notary.  Remember your state-issued ID!  Also, unless you have multiple originals of your child(ren)'s birth certificate(s) it is recommended to hand-carry your affadavit(s) and birth certificates to the Superintendent's office in your county.  While the office *will* mail back your originals if you include a SASE, things do get lost in the mail and replacements are not inexpensive.

According to A.R.S. 15-802 "Every child between the ages of six and sixteen years shall attend a school and shall be provided instruction in at least the subjects of reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies and science. The person who has custody of the child shall choose a public, private, charter or home school..."

It also goes on to include that parents may elect to delay education until age 8, but to do so legally, they must write a letter to the Superintendent's office explaining their election.

Next time: Additional national, statewide and local resources and information.
