Scores of artists will display their work at the 12th annual Gold Canyon Arts Festival on Saturday in the Gold Canyon community of 6,000 east of Apache Junction.

"The artwork is a big deal and we'll have wonderful music all day long," said Bob Homann, a festival coordinator and Gold Canyon resident.

Homann listed some highlights of the festival, sponsored by the Gold Canyon Arts Council:

• Selective art: "We have 100 artists. It ranges across the spectrum, from painting to sculpture to photography to jewelry," Homann said. "Forty percent of the artists are new to the show this year."

The show is a juried. Artists, most of which are from Arizona, are required to go through a selection committee.

• Cool tunes: "We have wonderful music. We call it the old and the new of the Southwest," Homann said. "From the old Southwest, we have Un Corazon Flamenco, which is castanets and dancing (inspired by) Spain. Representing Mexico, we have Maricahi Los Rebeldes. Brian Hammill is a world champion Native American hoop dancer, and for the more modern (sounds), we have the Manson-Crotty Quartet, playing jazz. The Leisure World Chordsmen cq will be singing old-time favorites."

• Tasty eats: Vendors will serve kettle popcorn, fresh-squeezed lemonade, Polish sausages on buns and barbecued beef, pork and chicken.

"Mountain View Coffee House, a shop in Gold Canyon, will serve their gourmet coffee," Homann said.

• Community causes: Each year, the festival spotlights area groups. local groups are spotlighted at the festival. This year, The Superstition Mountain Museum, Gold Canyon Pride, which strives to keep Gold Canyon looking spiffy and free of litter, and A.D.O.B.E., which promotes activities that help improve the community, will pass out distribute information.

• Desert scenery: "We are in the shadow of the Superstition Mountains," Homann said. "It is a wonderful venue, with lots of free parking."
