The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Superstition Mountain Post 9399 recently hosted a dinner and show in honor of local World War II Veterans and their wives and friends. The attendees (WWII Veterans  and wives were admitted free of charge) were treated to a roast beef dinner followed by  high-energy 1940s and ‘50s entertainment performed by the Arizona Swing Kids. More than 150 veterans, wives and friends attended the sold-out event.

A special time was set aside to honor Alice and Virgil Hedlund of Gold Canyon who were celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on the exact date of the dinner and show. The couple was presented with two specially decorated cakes, as the crowd sang “Happy Anniversary.” Virgil Hedlund served during World War II in the Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India theater of operations.

During the evening Apache Junction Police Chief Jerald Monahan presented local veteran Jim Keller with a Commendation Medal in honor of his service to our country during World War II.  Keller served in the U.S. Marines and received a Purple Heart as a result of serious injuries sustained in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

VFW Superstition Mountain Post 9399 also presented a check for $900 to representatives of Honor Flight Arizona who were in attendance.  Honor Flight Arizona flies World War II veterans to the memorial in Washington, D.C., at no cost to them. To register a WWII veteran for a trip, to be a guardian on one of the journeys, or to donate any amount you may visit the website: www.honorflightaz.org or phone Rick Hardina at (480) 982-1015.
