The Arizona Cardinal and University of Phoenix have partnered for the “MVPs in the Classroom” program to recognize and reward teachers throughout Arizona at each Cardinals regular season home game this season.  The MVPs in the Classroom will receive an Arizona Cardinals jersey, four tickets to a regular season game and four VIP sideline passes.

Two teachers from the Mary C. O’Brien Elementary School were named MVPs in the Classroom.  Patricia Baeza and Jackie Mims were both honored at the September 30 home game.  MCOB is overseen by Pinal County School Superintendent Orlenda Roberts.

Mrs. Baeza, the 2nd grade teacher for MCOB, is a MVP in the classroom.  Mrs. Baeza creates an effective classroom in which her students can grow as learners and individuals.

Due to the hard work that Mrs. Baeza gives to MCOB, the students in her class are prepared to enter the 3rd grade.  The percentage of students at or above the 50th percentile on the Stanford 10 assessment significantly increased last year by 10%.  In addition, the percentage of students reaching benchmark for reading on the DIBELS assessment increased from the prior year.

Mrs. Baeza collaborates with others to support the school.  An overwhelming majority of parents answering MCOB’s Parent Survey for last year ranked Mrs. Baeza in the highest category of Excellent.  The high parent rating can be attributed to frequent communication with parents through telephone, e-mail, and conferences.  Mrs. Baeza leads English Language Learner services for the school.  Test administration, development of ILLP’s, and staff training are headed up by Mrs. Baeza.  Mrs. Baeza has presented Structured English Immersion training for MCOB and for other teachers in Pinal County.  In addition, Mrs. Baeza plans school wide events of Make a Difference Day, the Winter Program, and Social Committee.

Jackie Mims is a MVP teacher at the Mary C. O’Brien School.  Ms. Mims is a reading coach who oversees the reading program for all grade levels and provides intervention directly to those students who need the most support in becoming strong readers.

Ms. Mims leadership in reading instruction has resulted in high student achievement on the AIMS across all grade levels.  For the past three years the school wide percentage of students meeting or exceeding the AIMS has been 92%, 88%, and 89%.

The success on the AIMS can be attributed to the planning, coaching, and direct instruction that Ms. Mims provides to the school.  Ms. Mims coordinates and plans for daily small group instruction led by four paraprofessionals in kindergarten through grade 3.  Ms. Mims collaborates with classroom teachers to effectively plan and instruct students.  Ms. Mims directly instructs small groups of students with the most intensive needs.

Ms. Mims also leads extracurricular activities for the school.  Patriot Day, Reading Night, and the Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab Competition are all spearheaded by Ms. Mims.
