Below is a letter sent earlier today to Gila County Sheriff John Armor (Democrat) and Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores (Republican) requesting a comprehensive investigation into recent allegations.

Sheriff Babeu stated, "Today, I have requested a comprehensive investigation into allegations made against me and my office, as well as crimes committed against me.  I have full trust in Sheriff Armor and County Attorney Flores to fairly investigate all matters."

Several local and national media outlets have requested to interview Sheriff Babeu regarding the release of findings from the Department of Justice on their investigation of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

At this time, Sheriff Babeu has not had the opportunity to read the investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice so he is not able to provide any information about it.  Sheriff Babeu is tied up with meetings for the remainder of the day and asked that I share with you this written statement regarding the timing of the release of information by the U.S. Department of Justice....

Speed Enforcement Details in Pinal County

In an effort to increase public awareness and keep our children safe during the school year, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is targeting school zones and surrounding areas with saturated patrols. The increased patrols will begin on August 8th, which is the first day of classes for Pinal County schools. The intensive enforcement will continue throughout the school year.

On Friday, July 1st, 2011 the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the parents of a 16- year-old girl in Arizona City.  The parents suspected their daughter (who is a special needs child) was possibly exchanging nude photos of herself with 22-year-old male named Timothy Lowe.  The photos were allegedly exchanged through the social networking site “Facebook” and later also through her personal email account.  The parents had questioned their daughter about their suspicions yet she denied it ever occurred.

A 30-year-old Pinal County resident had listed his 1997 Cadillac Deville for sale online through “Craigslist.”  On July 16th he received a phone call from a male subject who identified himself as “G.”  It was later determined “G” was in fact Donetrius G. Ward (age 29 of Chandler).

The victim and Ward met in San Tan Valley later that day and Ward asked if he could drive the vehicle to his mechanic so he could inspect it.  The victim drove with Ward to his mechanics house.  The mechanic checked the vehicle out and then Ward and the victim left.  The victim dropped Ward off at a house in San Tan Valley so Ward could think about the purchase.

New PIO at PCSO

On Monday, July 18th, 2011 the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office hired Elias Johnson as our new Public Information Officer.  Elias will serve as the main point of contact between our office and local, state and national media.  His duties will include media relations and the development of print, audio and video news items to be released to the public.  To reach Elias directly you can call his office at 520-866-5208.

Elias has an extensive media background and is a decorated graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, where he earned his degree in broadcast journalism.

During these challenging financial times, many law enforcement agencies across the Country have struggled to provide training and equipment for their staff.  Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has worked harder than ever in order to send staff to training and obtain much needed equipment, not only for PCSO, but also other entities within Pinal County.  These benefits costing Pinal County Tax Payer zero dollars.  The increase in training and equipment has assisted PCSO Adult Detention Center in obtaining the National Jail Accreditation, as well as contributed to many other Public Safety improvements, including lowering emergency response times by fifty percent.

On July 11, 2011 at 11:20 a.m., the Pinal County Sheriff's Office received information from a confidential informant that a possible "load vehicle" carrying illegal drugs was traveling in the area known as Vekol Valley, south of Interstate 8.

Pinal Regional SWAT, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and Maricopa County HIDTA were working together in the Vekol area, and responded to the area where the vehicle was reported to have been traveling. The vehicle was located abandoned in a rugged desert area approximately 8 miles south of Interstate 8.
