According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one-third of the fastest growing occupations will require an associate’s degree or a post-secondary vocational certificate. Students in the east valley have the unique opportunity to prepare for college and career while still in high school at the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT).

In August 2011, EVIT opened a new east branch campus adjacent to ASU Polytechnic near Power and Williams Field roads to better serve students in the southeast valley. For the 12/13 school year, the 10-acre campus will expand its course offerings to include cosmetology, anatomy and physiology for medical careers, medical assisting, pharmacy tech, nursing assisting, sports medicine, dental assisting, and aviation.

Prospective students and parents are invited to come learn more about the EVIT East Campus at an open house from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6625 S. Power Road, Mesa. A brief informational session will be held in the auditorium followed by tours of the campus. Registration and counseling staff will also be available to answer any questions.

High school students from ten sending districts can attend EVIT tuition-free for half day, and their home high school the other half, with free bus transportation provided for most programs.

EVIT adds to a student's academic instruction with hands-on learning provided by experienced professionals and excellent resources. Occupation-specific programs meet or exceed industry standards and offer students a pathway to a wide range of careers and further educational opportunities.

For students planning to attend college, EVIT offers dual or concurrent enrollment for several programs through various Maricopa Community Colleges so they earn college credit while in high school. Many students also find that certifications or career training gained at EVIT helps land them well-paying jobs while they work toward an advanced degree.

Cosmetology instructor Pam Devine estimates that approximately half of EVIT cosmetology graduates use their state license to work as a stylist, aesthetician or nail technician to pay for college tuition and related expenses.

“Many alumni of the EVIT Cosmetology program return to tell us how thankful they are to be earning more than their peers in a job they enjoy while working toward their associate’s or bachelor’s degree” said Devine. “Some students are even finding that they can get college credit for having a cosmetology license.”

For students that dream of being a pilot or working in the aviation field, EVIT offers training in aircraft flight operations, aircraft maintenance technology, air traffic control, unmanned aircraft systems, flight attendant and airport management. The proximity to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport also give students an additional facility to earn two and four-year degrees as they prepare for careers in the aviation industry.

The expanded offering of health programs at the east campus is aimed to meet the growing demand and student interest in the nursing, dental and medical fields.

According to the BLS, employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 34 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the healthcare industry expands because of technological advances in medicine and the growth and aging of the population, there will be an increased need for all healthcare workers.
