House Explosion in Johnson Ranch

House Explosion in Johnson Ranch Tisha Castillo/SanTanValley.com

Tonight around 7:30pm, an explosion was heard in Johnson Ranch.  The explosion came from a home off of Royal Oak Way, only a few hundred yards away from the K-2 Walker Butte Elementary School.

According to eye witnesses on scene, the explosion sounded as if a canon had gone off.  The walls on the home exploded outward and screens from the windows were blown off across the street.  A neighbor rushed to try and assist the gentleman after the explosion by putting a jacket, soaked in water, on him, but the man was allegedly so disoriented, he refused assistance.

By that time, PCSO was on scene and the area was closed off.  PCSO did ask the man if this was a meth lab explosion, and the man reportedly initially denied it and when asked a second time, he said "yeah, I was cooking and it exploded."  He was then flown to Maricopa Medical Center with severe burns and is in critical condition.

One of the neighbors interviewed, could not believe what had just happened.  He stated that only a couple hours before, he had about 15 kids in his backyard for a birthday party.  He lived in the home behind the house that exploded.  His four year old daughter was still crying hours later.

No one else was in the home and no other homes were damaged by the explosion.

UPDATE:

Feb 19th: 27 year old male, flown to Maricopa Medical Center, is in a medically induced coma and is not expected to live.

We have posted additional photos of the home to our Facebook Page here

Rural Metro is currently investigating the cause of the fire.  PCSO had  originally stated that it was a possible meth lab explosion.  Rural Metro is investigating whether or not it was a gas leak, or what else may have caused the explosion.  On site this afternoon we were told that a gas line had been run up through the attic as opposed to underground and may have been the cause.  We will update you with more information as it is available.

Feb 20th: It has been reported that the victim, has passed away.  We wish his family strength during this time.  RIP
