Look at real qualifications in sheriff's race

by: Glenn Millsaps, Candidate for Sheriff

Dear Editor,

Former Pinal County Sheriff Roger Vanderpool was quoted in the Arizona Daily Star, “But let’s face it, he’s damaged goods. That makes him beatable,” when referring to re-election hopeful Sheriff Paul Babeu.

I am concerned this race will be troubled by these “damaging issues” and not a matter of focus on merit. It has been reported I am one of the two relatively inexperienced Democratic candidates. I do not know Kevin Taylor personally, but as I understand he has 30 years of law enforcement experience, which includes running and owning a security company. Kevin is not relatively inexperienced. I am not sure if this gossip about me is being said because I look relatively young at 38 years old, am Democrat or because I have “more than four years” of experience in law enforcement as opposed to Babeu, who had less when he took office in 2008. I guess a candidate would need to have less than four years of law enforcement experience and be a weekend warrior to be considered qualified. I want the citizens of Pinal County to hear about me from me, a highly-educated, well-qualified, honorably discharged, disabled Marine veteran.

I have talked to several reporters and only a few seem to be reporting candidly. In all likelihood my career in law enforcement outweighs Babeu’s experience then and it does now four years later. I find it odd no one has mentioned Babeu was relatively inexperienced before he took office, only that he is now “damaged goods.” I have worked and volunteered for 17-plus years in law enforcement, which includes consulting community advocacy organizations on criminal justice matters, serving two overseas tours during my military active duty service, serving as a certified police officer, supervising Arizona’s worst criminals at the super maximum security prison in a special management unit, managing large caseloads in adult probation, providing detainees at a youth detention facility with general education curriculum, working four years preforming various duties as a federal law enforcement officer with the U.S. Department of Justice and several years of experience leading a national nonprofit organization committed to helping disabled military veterans and defending the rights of other protected classes. Not to mention, I am not one of those fly-by-night candidates that merely bought a house in Pinal County to run. I have called Pinal County home since 2003.

My position alone as CEO and president of a national nonprofit organization has given me the executive experience to lead any agency. The EEAD.org foundation was created to be a proactive as well as a reactive organization to combat employment corruption. EEAD is not only there to help the employee but to support organizations that want to improve internal policies and procedures. EEAD.org has assisted thousands of disabled veterans and other protected classes fight employment corruption, which includes protecting the rights of veterans under the Veterans Employment Opportunity Act.

I intentionally established early in my law enforcement career a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration emphasizing law enforcement. I also hold a Master of Business Administration degree and I have three years of Ph.D. studies in management and organizational leadership.
