Students are directly impacted by forced budget cuts

by: Robert Laliberte

I moved to San Tan Valley in 1992. I was nine when I started at J.O. Combs Elementary. I am twenty nine and have taught in the Combs District for eight years. Teaching for a year in my old classroom brought back memories which reminded me of my past and solidified my reasons for teaching.

I feel it is necessary to step in when students are directly impacted by forced budget cuts. The community of San Tan Valley pays taxes to the state of Arizona. A percentage of the property tax goes directly to the school district. The state does not fund extracurricular activities like athletics and music programs which is why the override is needed. Students involved in music such as the marching band succeed in academic classes. Students involved in athletics maintain focus and discipline in their classes.

If the 10% override does not pass, the future of extracurricular programs at all schools in the District is in danger. I have lived and worked in the San Tan Valley for twenty years. I received great education from the Combs School District and am part of a wonderful, hardworking staff. Please vote YES to extend the override.
