Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- A British national working for the International Committee of the Red Cross was kidnapped Thursday in Pakistan's volatile southwestern province of Balochistan, a police official said.
The worker, who was identified as Dr. Khalil Asa Jadi, was grabbed by armed men in the city of Quetta, near the Afghan border, said Nazir Kurd, a senior police official.
"Armed men intercepted the vehicle of Dr. Khalil as he was driving from his office to his residence," Kurd said, adding that he is a a Yemeni-born British national.
The kidnappers released the man's driver, Kurd said.
"At this stage we cannot confirm anything except that one of our representatives who is a foreign national has been abducted from Quetta," Najam Saqib, a spokesman for the Red Cross in Pakistan, told CNN.
Saqib said it was too early to determine anything about the incident and that the Red Cross has not been contacted by the kidnappers.
