A Pinal County sheriff's deputy was involved in a fatal shooting on a state highway south of Coolidge on Monday morning.
An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed after a pursuit with a Pinal County Sheriff's deputy on a state highway south of Coolidge on Monday morning.
The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. on State Route 87, about three miles east of Eloy.
Pinal deputies were investigating an armed robbery at an adult boutique, M Passion Adult Boutique, in Red Rock when the suspects fled and a PCSO deputy tried to stop it, according to Tim Gaffney of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
He said the suspects tried to ram the deputy's pickup truck and shots were exchanged.
One suspect was dead at the scene and the other was taken to Maricopa Medical Center by helicopter.
The deputy was not injured.
Helicopter news footage showed about a dozen Pinal County Sheriff's Office vehicles, and the medical helicopter on the road.
The deputy's pickup truck and an Audi station wagon involved in the chase were off the side of the highway. Footprints could be seen in an adjacent field.
SR 87 was closed to all traffic at milepost 117. The Arizona Department of Transportation said motorists should use Interstate 10 in both directions. State Route 287 connects with I-10 about 10 miles north of the closure, according to ADOT.
