Poston Butte High School Principal is Semi-Finalist for Principal of the Year

Poston Butte High School Principal, Dr. Tim Richard, has been named a semi-finalist for the Rodel Foundation Exemplary Principal of the Year Initiative. In an email to Superintendent Dr. Amy Fuller, Howard Paley, Rodel Program Administrator stated, “The Rodel Foundation of Arizona is committed to recognizing extraordinary principals who are making a difference in the lives of students; we are proud to count Dr. Richard as a semifinalist in our search for the 2014 Rodel Exemplary Principals.” The news of Dr. Richard’s personal achievement came on the heels of a fantastic cultural turnaround at Poston Butte High School this year.

Dr. Richard takes no credit for himself, though. He said, “It’s unbelievable what the staff and students have done this year at Poston Butte High School; they are awesome. Once we changed the culture by bringing on Celebration/ Remediation and a Professional Learning Community Model, the kids have completely embraced it. Now we’re at the point where we can identify our struggling students on a weekly basis in order to put interventions in place to help them succeed. It really is most wonderful to be a part of the positive changes.”

As a part of the selection process, Rodel will be sending a team to Poston Butte High School in November to observe the classrooms and to conduct interviews with teachers and staff. An announcement regarding the winner of the award is expected from Rodel in January 2012. Dr. Fuller was excited and said, “I can’t wait for the team to visit Poston Butte High School, a school where there have been zero fights this year; moreover, the reduction in the number of students with one or more F’s have reduced from 555 to 262 in nine weeks!

The Rodel Foundation of Arizona is committed to recognizing extraordinary principals who are making a difference in the lives of students in high-need schools. Rodel Exemplary Principals will be recognized for exceptional leadership and for two years will have the unique opportunity to help train, mentor, and inspire the next generation of Arizona principals.
