AJHS Sweeps Poston Butte In V-Ball

The Lady Prospector volleyball program earned a sweep over Poston Butte last Tuesday with all three teams winning. The varsity squad, led by 15 kills from Skylar Saathoff, 11 kills from Selena Quiroz and 29 digs by Carly Reid, defeated Poston Butte, 25-20, 25-13, 25-17. The junior varsity team, led by 29 team kills and 29 service aces, won their match 25-11, 22-25, 15-5, while the AJHS freshmen team rallied for a 15-25, 25-20, 15-7 victory behind six kills and six aces from Kaylee Marshall and 15 digs and 31 service returns from Shianne McMinn.

Also for the varsity team in the win over Poston Butte, Reid came up with 42 service returns, Amber Schmidt had 27 service returns, Casey Reid handed out 15 assists and added five service aces, Sarah Streibich had six kills and two blocks, Ashley Price contributed three kills and six blocks, and Jessi McMinn had three kills and five assists.

The Lady Prospectors also dropped a match at Queen Creek on Wednesday by the scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-22.

This week, the AJHS girls are at home on Tuesday, September 11 hosting Phoenix Arcadia, and play at Tempe Marcos de Niza on Wednesday, September 12. AJHS is also competing in the Estrella Foothills Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday. On Tuesday and Wednesday matches, the freshmen team plays at 4:00 p.m., the junior varsity at 5:00 p.m. and the varsity at 6:00 p.m.

Also in the win over Poston Butte, Monica Henry had 10 kills and 12 service returns, Taylor Gering had seven kills and five blocks, Brooke McCullen pitched in with five kills, four service aces and 10 service returns, Makena Gateb added five kills, five digs and 11 service returns, Sedona Aulik handed out seven assists to go with six service aces, Rachel Covarrubias had five aces, three digs, two assists and 22 service returns, Caitlin McDowell added five aces and 11 service returns, and Daylana Bush dished up five assists.

The junior varsity girls then lost their first match of the season at Queen Creek on Wednesday by the scores of 25-13, 25-21.

Also in the win over Poston Butte, Marshall added 23 service returns, Rylee Hoffman had five kills, six assists and six digs, Falann Mattison had four kills and two blocks, Jesse Lyons also had four kills, Noel LaChapelle added three kills, four aces and 11 service returns, Paige Mace had two kills and four aces, Samantha Tovar came up with five digs, and Iliana Dimauro had a pair of kills.

The AJHS freshmen team tacked on another comefrom-behind win at Queen Creek on Wednesday, rallying for a 15-25, 25-20, 15-7 victory.
