Pinal County Welcomes Merissa Mendoza as New Director of Public Health

Pinal County has officially appointed Merissa Mendoza as the Director of Public Health, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished career with the county. Mendoza, who previously held the position of Interim Director since last February, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this vital role.

Mendoza's journey with Pinal County's Public Health Department began nearly 13 years ago when she joined the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Her career trajectory within the department has been impressive, encompassing roles such as Nutritionist, Breastfeeding Coordinator, Nutrition Program Supervisor, and Division Manager for Nutrition and Vital Records.

A testament to her commitment to public health and nutrition, Mendoza holds a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Arizona State University and a Master's in Public Administration from Grand Canyon University. Additionally, she is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

Her appointment to the permanent role of Director of Public Health comes with high commendations and unanimous support from her leadership team, following the positive encouragement of the outgoing director, Dr. Tascha Spears.

MaryEllen Sheppard, Deputy County Manager, praised Mendoza's qualities, highlighting her ethical character, respect, empathy, and consistent focus on community care. Sheppard shared that when asked about Mendoza's attributes, the Public Health leadership team unanimously agreed, "That's her!"

Outside her professional life, Mendoza has pursued a culinary degree from the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. She is known to enjoy baking, reading, and spending quality time with her husband and two children.

Merissa Mendoza's appointment as Director of Public Health in Pinal County is a beacon of her dedication and skill in public health. The county looks forward to her continued leadership and contributions to the community's well-being.
