New Director Audra Michael Making Her Mark on Animal Care and Control

"I'm not saying that there are going to be a whole shift in the organization," stated Michael, "but there needs to be some procedures that need to be clarified and tightened up."

Even though she worked at the shelter when her predecessor Kaye Dickson was the Director of Animal Care and Control, Michael says being put in charge of the department has made her see a different side of the agency.

"You can work for years in an office and suddenly see things in a new light when you are in charge," Michael said. "I took my time getting know the operations from the management side. I've witnessed some mistakes being made and I feel it's time to make some changes to ensure those mistakes do not happen again."

Director Michael came to Pinal County in 2011 after working as a reserve officer for Apache Junction Animal Control for four year. She started off at Pinal County as an Animal Care and Control Officer and worked her way up to running the department.

"It's a passion, there is no doubt about that," Michael said. "You have to love animals, but you have to temper your passion with a realistic sense of where you are. We see some bad things happen to animals, but we also witness a lot of good things happen as well. That is one thing I try to emphasize to the staff, you are going to have good days and you are going to have bad days."

The Animal Care and Control Director said she is going to work hard on getting the word out about the shelter and that there are lots of animals that can be adopted out. Michael also credits the New Hope Program (a partnership with regional rescues) with an increase in lower rates of euthanasia for the department.

"I've worked with animals being euthanized, it's heartbreaking," stated Michael. "That's why the New Hope Program is so important. We are able to network these animals through these great partners at local rescues. We cannot thank them enough. But I am also dedicated to getting more and more of our adoptable animals out in front of the public. I want people to know that Pinal County does have a shelter and we always have a great selection of adoptable animals for them to look at."

The shelter is located at 1150 South Eleven Mile Corner; Casa Grande, 85194. Shelter hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) and Saturday's 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.
