Barbara McGuire Announces Re-election Bid for Senate in Legislative District 8

McGuire today pledged to continue the fight to properly fund Arizona’s schools and to focus on issues important to rural Arizona and her district. “I want to thank everyone who encouraged me to explore a run for Congress, but when looking at the issues of greatest importance to our communities and taking into consideration the needs of my family, returning to the State Senate is the right choice,” said McGuire. “My heart has always been committed to the people of Arizona, and I have a record of winning tough races and of standing up for my district.”

“The residents of Legislative District 8 deserve a State Senator who will put the needs of our district ahead of partisan interests and work hard every day for jobs, economic development, quality of life and public safety. They also deserve a State Senator that understands that there is no better investment we can make in our state than to properly fund Arizona’s public schools. I strongly believe in serving my community, and I look forward to the upcoming campaign and continuing my service to the residents of Legislative District 8.”

Sen. McGuire is a life-long Arizonan and lives in the town of Kearny. She currently represents large portions of Pinal and Gila Counties, including a portion of the Gila River Indian Community, and her legislative district is almost entirely within Congressional District 1.

Over the past two decades Sen. McGuire has served as a Salvation Army Unit Director, State Representative, small-business owner, Farm Bureau member, Ladies Auxiliary VFW member, honorary Major Civil Air Patrol, NRA member, Sheriff’s Posse member, and most recently as State Senator. She has also had the pleasure of working for a school district and served on the Inter-agency Council on Long-Term Care.

Sen. McGuire is known as an effective advocate for rural Arizona. She was appointed Rural Liaison by her caucus and was a founder of the Mining Caucus in 2013. She was awarded the American Heart Association Greater Phoenix Division 2012-2013, Outstanding Legislator of the Year, and the 2013 Legislative Friend from the AZ League of Cities and Towns. She has successfully advocated for an increase to the University Extension funds, CPR, and school bus safety.

McGuire is the daughter of a Veteran World War II Navy pilot. She has been happily married to Jim McGuire for the past 44 years. She has a son, a daughter and two grandchildren. Her great-great grandfather was a lawyer and colonel commander of the Mormon battalion of General Kearny's Army of the West.
