Letter to the Editor: Secure the Border Act

Letter to the Editor: Secure the Border Act

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes.

Arizona's legislature is preparing to enact HCR 2060, Secure the Border Act, repeating mistakes of SB 1070 from the past, ruled unconstitutional for its authorizing local law enforcement to act as immigration agents, resulting in unlawful racial profiling.

  • Mistakes that today continue to cost over $250 million to taxpayers in neighboring Maricopa County.
  • Approval of HCR 2060 is estimated to cost an additional $325 million each year for statewide taxpayers.
  • Millions here, millions there. Sounds like real costs being pushed onto taxpayers by our Republican leaders.

Unlike Pinal County's Sheriff, Yavapai Sheriff David Rhodes asks where is the money going to come from to support the additional costs for public safety.

I ask, does Pinal County really want to consider adding the cost of new prisons, providing additional inmate health care, loss of construction workers. Do you really want to engage in the immoral caging and separation of children from their work-seeking migrant families, all because extremist legislators want to rile up their anti-immigrant base in November's election?

A flawed and costly proposal designed not to reform our broken immigration system, but to rescue a criminally indicted insurrectionist presidential candidate from deserved defeat at the November election.

Members of this Board, how much more of these crazy unconstitutional proposals are you willing to tolerate.

To my fellow taxpayers. If you're not prepared to dish out more taxes, I encourage you to contact Representatives Teresa Martinez, David Marshall, David Cook, and Senators TJ Shope and Wendy Rogers. Tell them you don't want a larger tax bill. Tell them to vote no on HCR 2060.

Speaking of history repeating itself.

Today's agenda includes an executive session "for legal advice and contracts subject to negotiation regarding Pinal County Sheriff's Office posting opportunities on various social media platforms and the potential to monetize such activity."

I smell a deal to allow Sheriff Lamb to again exploit taxpayer-provided county resources in reality shows. A repeat of the history whereby he "monetized" and gamed the system for personal financial gain.
